Douglas Smith is Associate Professor and Chairman in the Department of Economics at Carleton University. Dr. Smith received a B. Comm. in 1967 and an M.A. in Economics in 1968 from the University of Toronto and received a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. He joined Carleton University in 1972 and was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Virginia in 1978-79.
Dr. Smith's research interests are in the areas of labour economics, labour relations and the economics of property rights. His recent labour market research has focused on the causes and implications of the growing degree of divergence between the labour markets of Canada and the United States. His research on property rights deals primarily with copyright issues and on the policy aspects of the process of copyright revision.
