Alex Sundakov is one of New Zealand's best known economists. From 1997 to 2003 he was Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, the country's leading independent economics think-tank.
Prior to that, he spent 5 years with the International Monetary Fund, including a posting as IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine.Between 1984 and 1992, Alex held a number of responsible positions in the New Zealand Treasury, and was heavily involved in various aspects of New Zealand's economic reforms. This included a period advising the Minister of Finance on health and accident compensation policy.
Alex continued his involvement in various aspects of health policy. In 2001 and 2002, he was a member of the New Zealand Ministry of Health Chief Executive's advisory forum. From 1998 to 2001, Alex served as a lay member of the New Zealand Medical Council. Since 2003, Alex has been Executive Director of Castalia, an international economics consultancy. His work includes advice on regulatory and competition issues in a wide range of industries, including the health sector, both in New Zealand and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Alex holds MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.
