First elected to the BC legislature in 1986 as MLA for Peace River South, Jack served in government as the Minister of State for the Northeast and Nechako, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources, and British Columbia's first Minister of Native Affairs. Re-elected in 1991, Jack was elected Leader of Reform BC. Re-elected again in 1996, he sat as an Independent MLA until retiring from politics in 2001. During this time, Jack was a vocal advocate for parliamentary reform. In 2000, he commissioned a study of reforms in other parliamentary jurisdictions entitled Towards Greater Efficacy for the Private Member.
