Alan Fitzgerald
Major Alan Fitzgerald is the Canada-U.S. Defense Relationships Branch Head with the Bi-National Planning Group (BPG), Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. The BPG was established post September 11, 2001 with an agreement signed by the United States Secretary of State and the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, for the purpose of enhancing military cooperation between the two countries, through bi-national military planning, surveillance and support to civil authorities.
Major Fitzgerald was born in Landstuhl, Germany in 1969. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1987 and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario in 1991 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering.
After completing his Military Engineer training in Chilliwack, BC in 1992, Major Fitzgerald was posted to CFB Petawawa where he served with the Base Construction Engineering Section, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment and Headquarters, 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. During this period, he served two tours in Bosnia, first with the United Nations and subsequently with NATO.
In 1998, Major Fitzgerald was posted to 4 Engineer Support Regiment in Gagetown, NB where he spent three years as a squadron commander with various sub-units. He was promoted to his current rank in 2001, and returned to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment as a Field Squadron Commander and then as Administration Squadron Commander.
Major Fitzgerald was posted in 2003 to his current position with the Bi-National Planning Group in Colorado Springs. He has worked as a member of the BPG for the past three years as a planner, an analyst and most recently as the Canada - U.S. Defense Relationships Branch Head. Major Fitzgerald and his family will return to Canada this summer, where he will assume the duties of the Deputy Commanding Officer of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Edmonton, AB.
