Richard J. Grant

Professor, Lipscomb University

Richard J. Grant is Professor of Finance and Economics at Lipscomb University and a Senior Fellow at the Beacon Center of Tennessee. Prof. Grant was an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, is a graduate of McMaster University, and studied at the Center for Study of Public Choice at Virginia Tech and George Mason University, where he earned a Ph.D. in economics. He has taught at universities in several countries, including the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He also served as Chief Economist of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, as Contributing Editor at the Financial Mail, and as the Director of Research and Publications at the Free Market Foundation of Southern Africa. His book, Nationalisation (1994), focused on South Africa and warned of the dangers to individuals and the country of excessive government control. His 1999 book, Real Money, explained monetary economics and policy to a broad audience. He has written several monographs and articles and is a contributor at Forbes.com. He met Nelson Mandela in the future president’s first year of freedom as well as several of the top members of the pre-transition government and opposition who were instrumental in bringing about the transition in South Africa.

Economic Freedom of the World: 2017 Annual Report

The Economic Freedom of the World: 2017 Annual Report is the world’s premier measurement of economic freedom, ranking countries based on five areas: size of government, legal structure and security of property rights, access to sound money, freedom to trade internationally, and regulation of credit, labour and business. This year’s report compares 159 countries and territories. In this year’s ranking, which is based on 2015 data, Hong Kong is again number one, Canada dropped to 11th from the 5th spot last year and is tied with the United States.
