1. How do I become eligible for the Student Leaders Colloquium (SLC) program?

To be eligible for the Student Leaders Colloquium, you must:

  • Be a current student enrolled in a Canadian college or university, or a graduate in 2023, between the ages of 19 and 30.
  • Be a resident of Canada.
  • Be willing to complete some preparatory work.
  • Be ready and prepared to actively participate throughout the duration of Colloquium.

2. Why is there an age-limit set for the SLC program?

Our target age group is from 19-30 to allow for students just beginning their academic and professional careers to discuss public policy with other students from across the country. The age limit helps to ensure the participants have an opportunity to network with fellow students around their own age.

3. I'm interested in attending, but my field of study is not related to economics or public policy. Can I apply?

Yes – participants from all academic backgrounds are welcome to apply!

4. I'm an international student attending a post-secondary institution in Canada. Can I apply?

Yes – international students are welcome to apply so long as they are living in Canada. Students living outside of Canada during the summer are ineligible and the Fraser Institute is unable to fly students internationally.

5. I'm a graduate or doctorate student. Can I apply?

Yes, you are welcome apply.

6. I recently graduated from my post-secondary institution. Can I apply?

If you graduated within the past academic year, you are eligible to apply.

7. What are the expectations or requirements for SLC participants?

Participants are expected to complete a selection of readings in advance, which will be sent by email prior to the program. They are expected to attend and participate for the full program, which runs from Thursday evening until Sunday morning. Participants are required to stay at the hosting hotel for 3 nights (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).

8. Will I be sharing my accommodation during the SLC program?

No. Participants will have their own room, but will have shared washroom facilities.

9. Will the roundtrip cost of the transportation from the airport to the hotel be covered?

Yes and No. Students will be given a stipend which, if used efficiently, should cover all ground transportation in Vancouver.

10. When will I learn about the status of my application?

You will be notified about the status of your application in early May.

11. I have participated in the SLC program in the past. Am I eligible to attend again?

You are welcome to apply again; however, as there are limited spaces and a significant number of strong candidates, we may prioritize applicants who have not yet attended the SLC program.

12. Will I have any free time?

This is an intensive program with little free time; however, there will be some evening time free of programming during which participants are free to choose how they use their time. Participants are responsible for managing their energy levels and are encouraged to consider the early mornings when planning their evenings.
