About the Event
This graduate seminar-style training program teaches journalists how to use an economic lens to analyze policies in Canada and around the globe. Some policy issues are dauntingly complex, and while economic reasoning doesn’t guarantee that the issues can be resolved, it nonetheless provides a powerful tool for critical thinking. The ability to determine opportunity cost, identify incentives, and predict resulting behaviour will help journalists set aside the emotion surrounding policy issues and discuss current events clearly.
For this advanced program, we recommend that participants have a solid understanding of economics and an interest in public policy, or have previously taken our Economics for Journalists program.
Bursaries
The Fraser Institute will provide a bursary to cover the cost of travel, accommodation (if applicable), and the program fee. The program fee includes tuition, materials, and included meals. Requesting a bursary does not affect application status and agreeing to pay the program fee does not guarantee acceptance into one of the programs. Bursary requests can be made on the application form. Please note: Some organizations do not allow employees to accept bursaries that pay for professional development.
Accommodation
The Fraser Institute will pay the cost of accommodation for non-local participants for the Thursday and Friday nights of the program (May 31 and June 1). The Fraser Institute will provide Saturday night accommodation (June 2) only if necessary due to departing flight availability, which will be determined at the sole discretion of the Fraser Institute. Participants are considered to be “local” if they live within approximately 60 km of the program (Greater Toronto residents).
Travel
The Fraser Institute will provide a bursary to cover the cost of return economy travel to the program via plane, train, bus, or ferry, or for mileage and parking for local participants. The Fraser Institute will not cover other travel expenses (i.e. taxis, airport parking, non-included meals, parking tickets, etc.)
